The Current State of Diversity in the Tech Industry
For the entirety of its existence, the tech industry has been exclusive and severely lacking in diversity.
Women, in general, are gravely under represented in this growing and lucrative industry, and people of color constitute an even slimmer percentage of big tech.
Though major tech companies have started releasing diversity updates, the progress hoped for has yet to be achieved.
- 7.7% of the total US labor force works in tech as of 2019
- 25% of tech jobs are held by women, and men hold 75% of tech jobs
- In the US tech sector, 62% of jobs are held by white Americans.
- In 2019, Black Americans accounted for 14% of the national population but occupied just 7% of tech jobs
- Black Americans hold 7% of jobs, Latinx Americans hold 8% of jobs, and Asian Americans hold 20% of jobs
- In the United States, 83.3% of tech executives are white
- On average, women in tech are offered a salary of 3% less than men for the same job, at the same company, with the same experience
- Compared with industries in general, the high-tech industry employs more white workers (68.5% versus 63.5%), Asian Americans (14% versus 5.8%), and men (64% versus 52%)
WOMEN IN TECH STATISTICS: Workplace Trends
- 26% of computing-related jobs are held by women.
- Just 3% of computing-related jobs are held by African-American women, 6% held by Asian women and 2% held by Hispanic women.
- 50% of women said they have experienced gender discrimination at work.
- 43% of Americans believe women create a safer, more respectful work environment than men. Only 5% of Americans believe men create a safer work space.
- Positively, women’s earnings are outpacing those of men’s when it comes to high-skill jobs.
- Women were 22% more likely to experience "Imposter Syndrome" in the workplace (the overwhelming feeling of being out of place compared to colleagues)

- Women in the tech industry were twice as likely to be furloughed or laid off than their male counterparts
- A total of 2.5 million women left the workforce in the US
- 43% of women report remote work as being a positive experience, while 42% of women have negative views

Since 2015, Skill Samurai, a STEM education and professional IT Certification franchise has introduced thousands of students to a broad range of technologies with an emphasis on computer programming.
Skill Samurai offers a complete , STEM.org Accredited & Certified curriculum to progress elementary school students from interest-based programs like robotics and Minecraft coding to high schoolers and adults with experience and certifications in fields such as Cloud Computing, IT Security, DevOps & Data Science.
We work with leading technology companies like Amazon/Google/Microsoft, and place extra emphasis on hands-on experience with technologies currently used in the industry. It is often described as a mashup of kid’s STEM camps and professional Coding Bootcamps.
